Project 3 - Programming on the Microsoft Surface

Goal To write an interactive application on the Surface
To work with the Scatter View and rich text displays
Due Extra Credit - December 2, 2009 @ 5 PM
December 4, 2009 @ 5 PM
Grouping To be done in groups of 2-4 students

Instructions

Your task is to code up an interactive Surface app for one of two applications:

  • CSE Main Office: In the spring, we will place a Surface in the CSE main office. The app will display information about various CSE research areas, either based on the research area itself (networking, biometrics, security, architecture, nano, etc.) or based on the faculty member.
  • Alumni Association: Envision an application where alumni can browse the campus and its buildings / events either by a map or through some other interface.

For either of the two cases, the interface and organization is up to you. There are no constraints on the interface aside from the fact that it should have some multimedia (sound, video) content. If you are unable to find relevant content, please let Professor Striegel know.

Your project should have two components:

  • The visual interface: The visual interface should employ a Scatter View like interface allowing the rotation and rich display of information. You do not have to use a Flow Document but can use whatever layout is appropriate.
  • The back end: The project should have a way to update material, be that material stored in flat files, SQL database, web server, etc. You are welcome to install whatever software is necessary on the three HP multi-touch machines with the caveat that the network services will only be visible to the Surface devices due to the NAT / firewall in the lab.

Point Distributions

The point distributions will be as follows:

  • Functional interface - 50 pts
  • Visual aesthetics - 20 pts
  • Back end design robustness - 20 pts
  • Writeup / discussion - 30 pts
