Computer System Design - Final Exam Problem

To be done individually

Home Monitoring System

Your task is to design a conceptual home monitoring system identifying parts for all of the required components. You should design components that are friendly to the average home but you are not required to actually create code or prototype the system. Examples of such systems can be found here. Your system should support the following functionality:

  • Monitoring of temperature in 4 different locations
  • Monitoring of the state of the garage door
  • Monitoring of the state of a window or door
  • Possess the ability to view state via the web

Create a 2-3 page writeup identifying all of the major components (complete with estimated pricing) together with a rough schematic describing how the components will be hooked together. You may use any COTS components (beyond an entirely functional system repackaged) for the system. The cost point for the final system should be appropriate for the home environment (hundreds, not thousands of dollars). In addition, you should briefly discuss the rationale for the design decisions that you made and the tradeoffs associated with those decisions.
