Assessment of course goals for CSE30264:

1.   Goal 1: Students understand network technologies such as Ethernet, Token Ring, Wireless LAN, ATM, etc. 

Direct measure: Homework 1.

2.   Goal 2: Students understand different performance metrics and are able to measure them by applying readily available tools and mechanisms (e.g., the libpcap library). 

Direct measure: Project 1.

3.   Goal 3: Students are proficient with bridging and routing (local and global Internet). 

Direct measure: Homework 2, midterm exam.

4.   Goal 4: Students understand concepts found in protocols such as TCP, including reliable transmission, flow control, and congestion avoidance.

Direct measure: Project 2, homework 3, midterm exam.

5.   Goal 5: Students understand the concept of client-server programming and are able to implement various server approaches (e.g., multi-threaded versus single-threaded). 

Direct measure: Project 3 and 4.

6.   Goal 6: Students are familiar with Quality-of-Service (intserv and diffserv) and Network security.

Direct measure: Final exam, homework 4.

7.   Goal 7: Students are familiar with common network applications (web, ftp, imap), peer-to-peer applications (gnutella, kazaa, bittorrent) and real-time traffic (RTP, H.323).

Direct measure: Final exam, project 4.
